Experimental Studies on Liver Function, Liver Scan, and Altzheimer¢¥s Cell after Side-to-Side Portacaval Shunt

Abstract
The author compared hematologic value, liver function test, the ammonia and nitrogenous compound of blood (BUN & NPN), liver scanning, and histopathological findings of anastomotic stoma, liver, spleen, and brain, during experimental course of the side-to-side portacaval shunt operation in experimental dogs.
Results are as follows:
1. In hematologic findings, the post-operative mean of RBC count and hematocrit value were progressively decreased until post-operative 3rd week.
2. In liver function test decrement of serum albumin and increment of serum globulin caused reversal of A/G ratio. Serum cholesterol and bilirubin were not remarkably changed. And serum transaminases (SCOT & SGPT) and TTT were progressively increased upto 3rd week and returned gradually.
3. Blood ammonia was progressively increased upto 4th week. and not retumed to preoperative level even on post operative 8th week. BUN was markedly decreased for 4 weeks and returned to preoperative level at post-operative 8th week. NPN was not changed remarkably.
4. Live scanning, mild hypertrophy was in 2 cases, and mottling and scattering were seen in 3 cases, but atrophic changes of the liver were not noted in all cases.
5. In histopathological studies, liver revealed the degeneration of hepatic cells, disarray of hepatic cell cords, mild congestion, and periportal infiltration. In spleen, sinusoidal congestion and hemorrhage were noted with mild white pulp atrophy and hemosiderin pigmentation. Anastomosing site revealed fibrosis in all cases and showed foreign body granuloma in 4 cases.
6. The number of Altzheimer¢¥s cell in brain, especially at frontal cortex, was markedly increased on 8th postoperative week.
